Rhizobacterium Serratia plymuthica-FR1 as a biocontrol inducer in Potato- Alternaria tenuissima interaction

Beneficial bacteria advocated plants due to pathogen suppression as well as strengthen plant defense. The potency of rhizospheric Serratia plymuthica-FR1 was assessed towards Alternaria tenuissima as a widespread causal agent of brown spot potato in Asian countries using in vitro and in vivo experiments. Moreover, FR1-induced resistance of potato against fungal pathogen was studied and the ethyl acetate extract of pure culture was evaluated by LC-MS. FR1 showed the potential to produce chitinase, protease, amylase, biosurfactant and iron scavenging siderophore. Plant growth promoting attributes consisting of phosphate solubilization, Indole-3-acetic acid, ACC-deaminase, and ammonia production was positive. FR1 bacterial suspension, volatiles and cell-free supernatant caused growth inhibition of A. tenuissima by 56.29 %, 63.5% and 30% in related assays, respectively. FR1 led to form swollen cells at the end of fungal mycelium and decreased the development of brown leaf spot in potato in vivo. This beneficial antagonist was considered as a resistance inducer in potato against A. tenuissima due to elevation of O2− and H2O2, boosted level of CAT, SOD, APX, GPX, PAL over-expression and total phenolics accumulation. Based on LC-MS data, Serratamide and hexadecylbutanediamine as polyketide-non-ribosomal antibiotics, C2-homoserin lactone as signaling molecule and several clear unknown peaks were detected. A more detailed examination of the generated peaks using advanced analysis methods is required. The capability of the FR1 strain to emit sodorifen as an unusual volatile should be investigated. There is a commercial formulation available for S. plymuthica, indicating that FR1 has the potential for formulation and utilization in agriculture
