چکیده مقاله:
The broad mite, Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks) (Acari: Tarsonemidae) is a pest of economic importance on many agricultural and horticultural crops including citrus, cucumber, and pepper. The control of this pest is difficult and usually done by using synthetic pesticides, which negatively effects the environments, human safety and non-target organisms. Therefore, there is a need for alternative and safe methods to control this pest on the agricultural crops. Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) has been identified as a potential predator of P. latus. In addition, host plant resistance can be one of the efficient strategies to manage P. latus. In this study, the effect of susceptible (Lomus) and resistant (Sympti) pepper cultivars on the life table parameters of the broad mite and its predator N. californicus was determined under laboratory conditions. The intrinsic rate of increase (r) of N. californicus on the susceptible and resistant pepper cultivars was 0.143 day-1 and 0.126 day-1, respectively. Furthermore, the value of this parameter in P. latus on the susceptible and resistant pepper cultivars was 0.318 day-1 and 0.248 day-1, respectively. The mean generation time (T) (15.38 day) and total life span (37.67 day) of the predator on the resistant cultivar (Sympti) was longer than in the susceptible cultivar. Our results demonstrated that resistant pepper cultivar has negative effects on both second trophic level (broad mite) and third trophic level (predatory mite), but this adverse effect on the broad mite was more than on the predatory mite.
