چکیده مقاله:
Astigmatid mites are cost-effective alternative diet compared with the complex tritrophic system used to rear phytoseiid mites to use in biological control programs. Using astigmatid mites as factitious prey simplifies the production process of phytoseiid mites. The current study aimed to assess the quality of the astigmatid mite Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) reared on a diet consisting of wheat bran and yeast, as well as a diet comprising wheat bran, yeast, and starch for rearing the phytoseiid mite Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot under laboratory conditions. The results revealed significant differences in all population growth parameters between the two dies tested. The intrinsic rate of increase (r) was significantly lower in the wheat bran + yeast diet (0.036 day-1) compared with the diet supplemented with an improvement agent, i.e. starch (0.107 day-1). Moreover, optimizing the dietary regime for the storage mite led to a significant increase in the total fecundity of the predatory mite, raising it from 6.15 to 11.50 eggs/female. Although the total lifespan of the predatory mite was calculated for both treatment groups, no significant difference was observed between them. The findings of this study indicated that the addition of supplements to the basic diet of the factious prey of predatory mites has a significant positive impact on their performance.
