| Ooencyrtus pistaciae (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) is a new endoparasitoid species recently described as associated with the pistachio green stink bugs (PGSBs) in Iran. Given the lack of biological data on this parasitoid, the study aimed to investigate the biological characteristics of O. pistaciae and assess its potential as a biological control agent of PGSB, Acrosternum arabicum. The experiment was conducted in a climate-controlled room with a temperature of 26 ± 1°C, a relative humidity of 60 ± 10%, and a photoperiod of 16:8 [L:D] hours. Adult longevity and fecundity were evaluated by exposing individual mated females to A. arabicum eggs (ten replicates) every 24 hours, and the number of eggs laid was counted until the death of the parasitoid. Sex ratio observations were based on the offspring that successfully developed into adults. Immature development was assessed by exposing A. arabicum eggs to female parasitoids for 6 hours, and host egg dissections were performed every 6 hours until the completion of the life cycle. The results revealed an immature stage duration of 11±0.05 days for O. pistaciae. The male and female parasitoids exhibited a longevity of 55±1.14 days, while the female lived for 48.67±1.33 days and laid an average of 139.33±9.03 eggs, resulting in a sex ratio (% females) of 0.77. The high fecundity and longer longevity of the parasitoid concerning its host could represent a desirable attribute as a natural enemy. These findings provide valuable insights for the development of a suitable biological control program targeting PGSB. |
