Population parameters of Tetranychus urticae Koch on cucumber treated by entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorokin

Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), is one of the most important mite pests worldwide. In the present study, population parameters of this mite pest on cucumber plants treated by entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorokin were evaluated. A concentration of 107 conidia/ml of both entomopathogens was used in three different methods (foliar spray, rhizosphere treatment and seed treatment). The experiments were conducted under laboratory conditions (25 ± 1 °C, R.H. of 65 ± 5%, and a photoperiod of 14: 10 (L: D). Population parameters of T. urticae were estimated by the age-stage, two-sex life table procedure. On the plants treated by B. bassiana, the highest duration of pre-adult development (11.37 day) and the lowest fecundity (22.42 egg) of T. urticae were recorded at foliar application. The values recorded for the net reproduction rate (R0) at control, foliar spray, rhizosphere, and seed treatments were as 40.27, 9.78, 11.55, and 11.38 (female offspring), respectively. In the case of M. anisopliae, the lowest (10.73 day) and the highest (12.71 day) duration of pre-adult development were recorded at control and foliar spray, respectively. Fecundity of T. urticae was also drastically affected by M. anisopliae and the lowest value was recorded at foliar treatment (20.84 egg). For both entomopathogens, the highest value of intrinsic rate of increase (r) of T. urticae was recorded at control. Furthermore, the lowest value of this parameter using B. bassiana and M. anisopliae was calculated as 0.147 and 0.121 (day-1) at foliar treatment, respectively.
