چکیده مقاله:
Wide use of synthetic pesticides to control plant pests and pathogens has growing limitations due to their eco-toxicological risks. The application of microbial based biopesticides has become a sustainable alternative to the use of such chemicals. The global microbial biocontrol agents' market was valued at around 3 billion USD in 2023. This market is estimated to reach more than 12 billion USD by the end of 2032 with a CAGR of 16.4%. Iran with about 15 million cultivated area and presence of many biotechnology companies has potential to have 1-3% of world biopesticide's market. Biotechnology has played important role in the global development of microbial biopesticides during the last decades. These technologies include next generation sequencing (NGS), genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metagenomics, genetic engineering, genome editing, synthetic biology, bioprocessing engineering, and fermentation technologies which have been widely used to find and improve novel microbial strains with high biocontrol efficiency and to optimize their economic industrial scale fermentation. In addition to the importance of correct selection and improvement of potent strains, the ideal conditions required for development of high efficiency formulations of biopesticides including shelf life, storage, application technology, quality control and biosafety should be prepared. This presentation will emphasize on the current situation, perspectives and challenges of microbial biocontrol agents and the role of advanced biotechnology in development of new biopesticides for harsh climate conditions in the near future.
