Fifteen years of research for technical know-how in mass production and preservation of Trichogramma in Iran

Biological control, particularly the use of Trichogramma for pest management, is a long-term and environmentally friendly method of pest control. In Iran, research on Trichogramma has continued for the past half-century, and several Trichogramma species specially T. brassicae are mass-reared and sold by several small and semi-commercial companies. Although the production of Trichogramma may at first seem simple, effective production is determined by many factors, including the species of Trichogramma used; the quality and fitness of the host product; the timing and the packing of the product and often complex interactions between the parasite, the production methods and insectary conditions.
To assist in this effort, the main of this project from 1990 in the Ecology and Behavior Laboratory of the University of Tehran was how to determine the technical knowledge of the production and storage of Trichogramma protocols for biological control programs. During this period, several sub-projects were implemented in the form of nearly 20 postgraduate theses to answer the above topics, from the mass production of Mediterranean Flour Moth (Ephestia kuehniella) and Angoumois grain moth, (Sitotroga cerealella) as a host to the genetic, behavioral, and bio-ecological studies of Trichogramma parasitoids. Its results were published in nearly 50 scientific-research articles in prestigious international journals. The principles of practical results of these achievements will be discussed in this lecture. It is hoped that this lecture will serve as a resource to pest management advisors, consultants, Association of Producer BCA and specialists, and also others seeking information on biological control using Trichogramma.
